January 10th was the new City Council's first meeting together.
It was a big training session for the recently elected city council and an annual training session for all sitting members.
A few items that will be brought to the public on January 24th were discussed in a work session for the council to learn more and give residents additional time to ask questions.

Jan. 17th 2024, was another BIG DAY for our new council members; New Council Member Orientation Day!
New Council members go through a series of trainings to help them best represent their constituents. While running for office they meet all of the departments and learn about their functions.

In early December, they are sent to the Utah League of Cities and Town’s (ULCT) Elected Officials Training where they learn the fundamentals of city business and the powers and duties of the office. After the candidates were sworn in, Human resources provided a brief onboarding reviewing logistics.

Between their Oath of Office, and the first city council meeting staff guided them through a step-by-step process to provide educational information regarding more difficult items on the upcoming agenda.
At the inaugural 2024 city council meeting, Vineyard Legal Counsel did training on GRAMA, ethics, the Open Public Meetings Act, basic agenda training, and Roberts Rules. The agenda was updated to provide a work session on items that would come later in the month. This provided additional time for both new council and residents to become more familiar with upcoming decisions. As the Chair, I additionally guided the Council through the agenda and prepared them for what their obligations were for future meeting.
January 17th , New Council Member Orientation Day, our new Council Members met with departments and received a booklet to give them a head start. They were also provided a Powers and Duties book if they didn't receive one at the December training.

Their day was filled with departments presentations detailing a snapshot review on accomplishments, budgets, policy procedures, meeting dates, structural charts, legislative information, strategic goals and other information to assist them as they reach out to constituents and legislators for the upcoming retreat and legislative session.
The training process is continuous and is a good reminder of the proactive approach it takes to work together to learn best practices to make our community the best it can be.

The Legislative session started Tuesday, January 16th, 2024.
